Introduction

Welcome to the latest edition of Massage Moves, the newsletter about massage at Maroubra Dynamic Physiotherapy.

We are continuing to provide massage 6 days a week (and our schedule is listed on the reverse of the newsletter). However, from the 3rd May Richard will be away for 3 weeks. Whilst Amanda and Verity will be able to increase their hours, it is unlikely that our availability will be as extensive during that time. So we advise you to book your massages early to avoid disappointment. Also if you wish to see Richard before he goes away then again an early booking is advisable.

Since the last newsletter Richard has completed a “Pregnancy Massage Workshop” at Nature Care College. The benefits of massage during pregnancy are immense so if you are pregnant (or know anyone who is pregnant) then now is an ideal time to book in for a pregnancy massage.

Bear Cottage Fundraiser - Sunday 18th June

Last year Richard held a successful fund raiser for Bear Cottage in Manly and will be repeating it on Sunday, June 18th at Maroubra.

Bear Cottage is NSW's only children's hospice, located on the grounds of St Patrick's Estate, Manly in Sydney. The hospice provides temporary respite, end-of-life care and bereavement support to children with life limiting illnesses and their families. Bear Cottage was established through the generosity of the community. Its $1.5 million annual budget continues to be supported by donations. More information is available at
http://www.bearcottage.chw.edu.au/
On Sunday 18th June May, Richard is offering 30 minute massages at Maroubra Dynamic Physiotherapy for which there is no charge! However (& as usual there is always a however), you will be asked to take a sponsorship form so that you can give a donation to Bear Cottage commensurate with the value of the massage you receive. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

If you wish to support Bear Cottage then please make a booking for a massage by ringing 9344 7533. If you have never had a massage before then this is great chance to try one whilst supporting a very worthy cause

Odd Bod Tidbits

• In the last 4000 years, no new animals have been domesticated.

• Leonardo da Vinci could write with one hand and draw with the other at the same time.

• The first couple shown in bed together on television were Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

• A rat can last longer without water than a camel.

• If you stretch out a Slinky it measures around 27 metres long.

Processed Foods and Prostate Cancer

Research has indicated that the more fat you eat, then the greater your chances of developing prostate cancer. In addition, the types of food a person eats, along with the amount and frequency of food, can also contribute to an increased prostate cancer risk.

In a recent Canadian study, researchers explored the link between diet and prostate cancer in more than 400 men ages 50 to 80. Each man completed diet questionnaires and the researchers assigned each of the men into one of four dietary patterns: "healthy living" (high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and poultry); "traditional Western" (red meat, processed meats, sweets, and alcohol), "processed" (processed meats, red meat, organ meats, refined grains, vegetable oils, and soft drinks), and "beverages" (high intake of tap water, soft drinks, fruit juices, poultry, and potatoes).

The results indicated that men whose diets fell into the "processed" pattern had a significantly higher risk of developing prostate cancer than men in the other groups (greater than 2˝ times increased risk factor). Men with traditional Western diets showed a "slightly increased prostate cancer risk," while men in the other groups either had less risk of developing prostate cancer.

While prostate cancer is quite common in men, there are simple steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of you getting it. Lowering your intake of processed foods and red meats, and increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables and whole (unrefined) grains will certainly reduce your risk.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is a time of great change, physically, hormonally and emotionally. However change, regardless of how welcome it might be, can be extremely stressful. Whilst there are two of you who need (and deserve!) support then your health is of extreme importance.

Ongoing massage, during your pregnancy can be a great way to deal with the stresses, the postural changes and emotional support you require. A pregnancy massage can relieve your physical and emotional tension.

The Benefits of Pregnancy Massage
Massage can help with so many of the aches and pains that arise from the changes that occur during pregnancy. These benefits include:
• relieving pain in the joints and muscles which have greater stresses placed on them due to the extra and redistributed weight
• reducing and easing back and neck pain caused by poor posture, muscle weakness and imbalance
• improving blood flow to all areas providing the cells of the body (& your growing baby) with greater nutrition
• increasing flexibility enabling you to cope with your changing shape and distribution of weight
• assisting in reducing muscle cramps and spasms
• improving the lymphatic circulation, gently pushing fluid into circulation to reduce excess fluid retention
• relaxing the mum-to-be to decrease general stress levels and provides emotional support and nuturing.

Obviously there are times and conditions for which massage is not suitable. If you have any questions or concerns then we suggest that you either contact your medical practitioner to ensure that massage is appropriate for you or feel free to contact us on 9344 7533 or if you have any questions about pregnancy massage. Richard has completed a Pregnancy Massage Workshop and will be able to provide you with the information you need.

A pregnancy massage can be relaxing and soothing or a more deep remedial to help free up the overworked muscles (or a combination of both). Regular massage during your pregnancy will provide you with emotional and physical support to ensure that your pregnancy and labour is as stress free as possible.
